Natural product development discovery lab
We had gathered plant materials consisting of lemon and rosemary for this lab to see if they could inhibit the growth of bacteria. Plants often have antimicrobial activity which means they are often used in antibiotics in modern medicine. Our results have shown that the area surrounding our extracts was almost completely free of bacterial growth. With these findings we were able to conclude that these two plants are likely used in modern medicine and perhaps older herbal remedies. Our predictions were accurate throughout the lab. The negative controls could not inhibit or stop the growth of bacteria at all. The positive controls could however stop and or inhibit the growth of bacteria. These discoveries are crucial in the field of biotech. Bacteria adapt to antibiotics and are able to resist them. The advances we make in medicine are tied to biodiversity and without it we would be plagued with diseases we have no remedies for. Protecting biodiversity in some ways ensures our survival as a species. We did not come across errors in this lab, as everything went as predicted.
